Since opening in 2020, the amazing HANA wellness space in Grey Lynn has earned a name as the go-to sanctuary for ultimate relaxation and hot healing therapy. And although the Infrared saunas and new Contrast Therapy have been heroed as the most popular of their wellness offerings, PBM therapy, commonly known as the Light Pod, is the lesser-known, but equally beneficial treatment.
If you’re a regular when it comes to facials, you’re probably already familiar with the incredible benefits of facial red-light therapy – PBM is similar, but for the whole body.
Photobiomodulation (or PBM) is popularly used for soft tissue injuries, joint conditions, neuropathic pain as well as skin healing benefits – including repairing damage from the sun, reducing wrinkles, fading scars, and healing acne or blemishes.
PBM involves the therapeutic application of specific wavelengths of light to the body, and the very user-friendly MitoGen Whole Body PBM light pod at HANA provides concentrated red and near-infrared light to boost cellular energy production, stimulate healing and regenerate damaged tissue, delivered through a capsule you lie in to relax for 20 minutes.
For athletes, or anyone regularly training from marathon runners to F-45 addicts, PBM therapy has significant benefits for performance, so much so that there is debate as to whether its use should be allowed in professional athletes.
Studies have revealed that the use of PBM can increase muscle mass gained after training and there is evidence that PBM therapy prevents damage to muscle tissue after exercise by reducing inflammation and oxidative stress and preventing delayed onset muscle soreness. In a study assessing muscle recovery in professional cyclists, treatment with PBM provided a 19 per cent increase in the average time of exercise before exhaustion.
And for the men out there, another benefit is PBM’s testosterone boosting effect. A rise in testosterone is associated with an increase in muscle mass and strength, as well as a rise in libido and an overall improvement in mood and energy.
For most conditions, daily to every-other-day use of the pod for at least two weeks is recommended, followed by a once- or twice- weekly maintenance regimen. Results will usually start to be seen in anywhere from 24 hours to 2 months of proper use, or under 20 minutes for pain relief with infrared saunas and red light therapy combined.
The experience itself is deeply relaxing, after you get past the original “hang on, this feels like a sunbed!” moment. Once you put that to the back of your mind and rest assured that you are doing only good things for your skin health and overall wellbeing, it’s soon addictive.
