Trends come and go – some disperse as fast as they arrive, while others stick around for years to come. Below, industry experts give us a guide to their key beauty trend predictions for 2023.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WILL CHANGE THE WAY WE SHOP
The future of beauty lies in AI and there’s no denying 2023 will see more of us adopting this technology when we shop. So just what is AI? askbella’s founder Elaine Yang gives us a simple definition – “AI stands for artificial intelligence, where we’re using computers to mimic the capabilities of the human mind. AI uses data from the past and puts it through a complex system, which allows it to learn from this information and make predictions about what will happen next.”
If it sounds too futuristic, it really isn’t. AI has been around for years so it’s no surprise that it’s starting to infiltrate the beauty industry.
askbella is an Aussie beauty platform that currently uses AI to make product recommendations based on the user’s skin. The tech works using AI systems that combine large sets of data with intelligent, iterative processing algorithms that have learnt from patterns in the data that has been analysed. This functionality uses known data to enable it to predict a beneficial skincare regime for the user.
For example, if a customer has dry skin, the AI algorithm could recommend moisturisers that would work best for their skin type. The same algorithm could also recommend products liked or recommended by other customers who have similar skin conditions. If that sounds all too much, just know that the beauty industry has relied on big data for years now to predict trends and create new products (but thankfully it still heavily relies on human input). The benefit of AI is that it can do things quicker and faster than a human can
INNER WELLNESS WILL CONTINUE TO RISE
2022 saw an emphasis on ingestible beauty supplements, whether that be collagen powders or acne capsules, and there’s no denying they’re not going away any time soon. And why should they? There are many proven products on the market with technology only continuing to improve formulas. If you’re not yet sold on beauty supplements, chances are 2023 will be the year that you lean in. NEE-V’s founder Eryn Behan says beauty supplements are rising in popularity, thanks to their ability to slip into anyone’s routine (after all, some are just like taking your daily vitamins).
“These supplements essentially contribute to collagen reserves in our bodies (aka help replenish some of the loss we experience due to ageing). Just like someone might take an iron supplement if they’re vegetarian (and not getting much iron in their diet), people can now take a beauty supplement like collagen to give them a refill (knowing that the body stops producing as much collagen as we age).”
INTRODUCTION OF INTUITIVE BEAUTY
Intuitive Beauty is a skincare trend that is fast gaining traction, thanks to the simplicity of it all. The idea behind it is to simply listen to what your skin needs. That means monitoring what it’s doing and applying your skincare as per the requirements of your skin. As Biologi’s Dermal Specialist Lucy Macdougald explains, “Intuitive Beauty is about listening to your intuition and what your skin is trying to tell you – it’s written all over your face. Gone are the days of mindlessly applying a skincare routine (just because it’s what you’ve always done) and here to stay is actually listening to your skin. We’re now seeing consumers rely on the concept of choosing the most suitable skincare products each and every day, rather than relying on old practices that aren’t necessarily getting the best out of your skin. Intuitive beauty is the concept of understanding what the skin needs and choosing a product based purely on that. This allows you to treat the skin on a cellular level rather than applying synthetic ingredients that can sometimes do more harm than good. Intuitive beauty gives consumers control over their own skincare regime for faster, longer-lasting results.”
A great way to implement this practice is to notice what’s actually happening with your skin. Is it looking a little dry? Perhaps it’s time to up your water intake and apply a hydrating serum. Looking oily? Maybe you’ve done some damage to your natural skin cycle and now your skin is producing too much oil. Try to strip back on any over-cleansing or over-exfoliating practices and implement a product that can regulate the oil flow. Also, consider how your diet and lifestyle can affect your skin and decide if you need to overhaul that too.
SELF-CARE WILL BE PRIORITISED
By now most people know that there is a mind-body connection when it comes to our mental and physical health. If you aren’t already prioritising self-care, 2023 might be the year that you turn your attention inwards.
As Lysn psychologist Nancy Sokarno explains, “Engaging in self-care should be a crucial part of everyone’s routine as it can be beneficial in a number of ways. Self-care activities can give your body and mind time to rest and will help you to relieve the pressures of everyday life. What’s more, giving yourself time to reset and rejuvenate can allow you to avoid or reduce the symptoms of stress and anxiety. In fact, self-care has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety and depression, reduce stress, improve concentration, increase happiness, improve energy, and the list goes on. Self-care can include something great such as running a hot bath while reading a book, indulging in your favourite TV show, or simply exercising, a hygienic sleep routine without screens and stimulants, eating a nutritious diet, as well as a good chat to your best friend.”
