A skincare routine for the winter season

‘Tis the season to change up your skincare! Now that we are well into winter not only do we want to switch up our wardrobes, but we also want to do the same for our skincare routines. As colder temperatures approach, so does dry and dull skin. This is due to the dry air, harsh winds, and a constant exposure to indoor heaters that can suck the moisture from our skin and strip the natural oils that is essential for healthy and glowing skin.

But don’t go throwing out your entire skincare every season, simply switch from say a lighter gel moisturiser to something richer to keep your skin happy and hydrated. Think creams, balms and oils!

Exfoliate

A gentle exfoliation is great during the wintertime as it can help remove the dead skin cells that are accumulated from dry cold air. But remember to never overdo it with the exfoliation as that can also lead to dryness and irritation. Exfoliate once a week. Personally, I love a good chemical exfoliator like the Hydra-Bright Pro 5 Liquid Exfoliant from Glo Skin Beauty.

Gentle cleansers

It’s a good idea to switch your cleanser over to something that is more hydrating and won’t strip the natural and healthy oils from your skin. The La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Cleanser is a new favourite of mine for the colder season. It’s gentle, anti-irritating and hydrating. A cream cleanser that I am really enjoying at the moment is the Ceramide Purifying Cream Cleanser from Elizabeth Arden. It’s such a moisturising cleansing lotion that helps to cleanse the skin without making it feel so dry.

Eye Cream

A good eye cream is important all throughout the year. However, the dry air during winter can be a moisture-sucker for the delicate areas such as under our eyes. It’s one of the most sensitive and high-maintenance parts of our face as the area doesn’t contain oil glands. An eye cream I am loving during the colder months is the Prevage Anti-Aging Eye Serum 2.0 from Elizabeth Arden. The main ingredient found in this eye serum is Idebenone, which is an antioxidant that protects against environmental aggressors, corrects aging signs and gives the skin a youthful glow. It also has a cooling applicator which helps with de-puffing!

Moisturiser

Opt for rich and thick moisturisers during winter, this will give your skin a beautiful glow and help with preventing any dry or patchy areas from harsh weather. Moisturisers that contain oils will help hydrate and revive your skin. Drunk Elephant’s Whipped Cream is amazing as it contains 6 whipped African oils and ceramides that deliver instant hydration. Currently, I have also been loving the Hydra-Bright AHA Hydrator from Glo Skin Beauty, it truly gives your skin the most beautiful glow!

Serums

Consider a serum that is packed full of nutrients to help give your skin that boost of nourishment it will need. I’m currently enjoying Caudalie’s Vinosource-Hydra S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum or Ole Henriksen’s Glow Cycle Retin-ALT Power Serum which is a great plant-based retinol alternative.

Sunscreen

Even though it’s winter and we’re probably spending most of our time indoors and away from the sun, that doesn’t mean you should skip the SPF. You’re still at risk for sun damage from UVA rays and it’s important to remember that sun damage actually accumulates over time. The Hydra UV Protect Face Fluid SPF 50+ from Bondi Sands offers deep hydration and it’s non-comedogenic so it won’t clog pores. It also makes a great base for when you’re applying makeup.

Face Oil

I can never get enough of a good skin oil, I actually use one all throughout the year but definitely a lot more during the colder months. Oils help trap all the other products you’ve applied before too which is why it’s best to finish off your skin routine with an oil. I rotate a few oils around and currently have been enjoying Charlotte Tilbury’s Collagen Superfusion Facial Oil and Mecca’s Everyday Face Oil.
