As we all know, protection from UVA and UVB damage via an SPF is fundamental for skin health. But what about blue light? Blue light emitted from the sun and our digital devices is also bad for our skin.
Blue light (also referred to as High Energy Visible or HEV light) poses potential skin harm via free radical generation. This free radical generation can lead to changes in your skin cells – including cell shrinkage and death – which speed up the aging process. Even exposure as short as 60 minutes can trigger these changes.
In addition, blue light has the ability to penetrate deeper into the skin compared with both UVA and UVB light. In fact, blue light can penetrate all the way to our dermis, where our collagen and elastin live, potentially resulting in a loss of firmness and an increase in visible lines.
