Homerolling to Maximize Your DIY Glow

Collagen Induction Therapy a.k.a. Dermal Needling or Microneedling, is a relatively new yet revolutionary procedure with very little downtime and phenomenal results. Unlike ablative skin treatments like lasers and peels that remove and destroy the epidermis, CIT creates micro channels in the dermis of the skin to encourage our own body to stimulate collagen and elastin production.

In clinic, the microneedling procedure is carried out by a surgical-grade stainless steel single-use micro-needles at a depth of 0.1mm to 2mm depending on your skin concerns. Home rolling, on the other hand, can be carried out in the comfort of your own home for regular skin regeneration treatment to dramatically reduce wrinkles, scarring and stretch marks. The best part is, it’s incredibly affordable compared to ablative treatments that also require a much longer healing period.

Mukti is one of the early cosmetic chemistry pioneers of clean and natural beauty. Founded in 2000, the mononymous Mukti brand grew into an award-winning certified organic brand that set the benchmark in Australia for years to come. As an eco-activist and apothecary artisan, Mukti’s ultimate goal is to reconnect people to nature and encourage toxin-free healthy lifestyles and beauty regimes.

Amongst her impressive collection of skincare products that harness indigenous Australian actives and nature-identical ingredients, Mukti has a singular beauty tool; Micro Dermal Roller, $68.22. “It works by pricking the skin to create numerous micro-punctures or channels. It sounds painful but it creates minimal noticeable damage to the upper epidermal layer, and microscopic injury and minor bleeding to the deeper dermal layer. The magic happens below the surface triggering a wound-healing repair response in the skin,“ Mukti says.

It may seem intimidating to onboard the sense of responsibility when treating your own skin with a microneedle beauty tool, but it’s not as scary or painful as you’d think. It enhances the efficacy of serums and moisturisers by 40% by allowing passages for deeper penetration of actives. And the results are totally worth it.

“When performing a home treatment, it’s essential that you avoid using needles that are too fine and pushing down too hard on the skin using unnecessary pressure. Rather, keep the pressure even.”

How to Use A Home Roller:

  1. Prep the skin by cleansing
  2. Gently roll the dermal roller up and down across each section of your face three times using light pressure. Avoid eyes and lips.
  3. Roll vertically, horizontally and then diagonally, in a Union Jack pattern. Complete this on each area of your face three to four times. Use less pressure on areas where the skin is sensitive or finer like under your eyes. The treatment should take a few minutes and can be repeated twice a week.
  4. Follow by applying a serum or elixir and press into the skin until absorbed.

For optimal results, you can pretreat your skin with serums such as the Mukti Vital C Elixir, $125, that contain bioactive concentrations of plant based polyphenols, peptides, vitamins and antioxidants. “These are specifically designed to boost skin regeneration and rejuvenation and if used in conjunction with the microdermal roller, the benefits are multifaceted. It may create a slight flushing and products may spike after application so it’s best to perform at the end of the day after you cleanse.“

The superficial holes close within 15 minutes so the likelihood of a skin infection is low. For those with skin impairments such as rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, raised scarring or other sensitivities, home-rolling may not be the ideal treatment.

When it comes to roller maintenance, simply sterilise with boiling hot water after use. Once a month, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil to a water solution. Dip a toothbrush into the solution and clean only the metal head of the dermal roller. Replace your roller every 3-6 months.

Results

As home-rolling allows skincare actives to reach further into the dermis, your skin will be able to respond faster and provide more dramatic results. Collagen and elastin production is boosted to completely rejuvenate the skin and in essence, turn back time. Dull, uneven and tired looking skin will transform into taught, bright and youthful skin that is significantly smoother in texture. Pores, acne scars, pitting, pigment, acne and stretch marks can all be expected to diminish. For a bi-weekly glow-from-home treatment, there’s no other that compares when it comes to maximising your skin’s true potential.
