Ten Years Strong – Mia Dolce Celebrates A Milestone

by Esha

Claire Jarman and her Team at Mia Dolce have celebrated the milestone of 10 years in business and 10 years of being one of Dermalogica’s most esteemed skin centres in New Zealand.

As one of The Beauty Book’s approved skin centres, we are proud to celebrate this milestone with the expert team at Mia Dolce. We caught up with Claire to find out more about the journey.

Why did beauty therapy interest you and how did it all start?

When we opened Mia Dolce, we were the first in Havelock North and Hastings to work with Dermalogica and introduce this professional range to the area. The brand not only offers ongoing training for the staff, but has also allowed myself to travel to conferences around the world, where I’ve been lucky enough to hear international keynote speakers and hear about skin health innovation. Our passion for this brand, coupled with the expertise of our team, means we are now ranked as #2 Dermalogica Skin Centre in New Zealand.

I have always had an interest in fashion, hair and make-up. When I was 17 I started a full time job at a material shop and across the mall was Elaines – Perfumery and Beauty Therapy. I always looked at the glamorous woman and thought they had an amazing job! Fast forward a year, while nannying in the UK I came across an advertisement to study at a Beauty Therapy School in London. It was like a penny dropped, and at that moment, I realised that this is what I wanted to do. Once I’d finished my travels I headed home to Study at the NZ Institute of Beauty Therapy and Electrolysis in Palmerston North. Jane Bourke, the owner of the school also introduced me to Dermalogica, and from that point on, I knew I wanted to work with the brand when I started out on my own.

Who have been the strongest influencers in your life?

My husband Richard, he has always believed in me (even when I’ve had my own doubts) and is my voice of reason. My Mum and Dad for installing a strong and loyal work ethic in me. My Father in Law Roger, who has been so encouraging and positive about our business right from Day 1. Professionally, my first Employers in Wellington Lisa Perigo and Jane Godwin, who made me the best therapist I could be.

How did you come up with the idea for Mia Dolce?

Ever since I started working in the Beauty Therapy industry, it was my dream to own my own business. 13 years later the opportunity to buy the business I worked in sparked my interest into making this a reality. However, when this fell through, it reignited my drive and passion to make it happen, and so I took the giant leap to start Mia Dolce.

Why do you love the line of work you are in?

Where do I start?! I love the fact that no matter what treatment you perform (even if it’s uncomfortable) you make that client walk out the door feeling better in themselves. I love education and learning new technology, treatments and ingredients that are constantly evolving in our industry. But most of all it is the relationships that I have built with my clients during this time.

What are you most proud of accomplishing?

I am proud of starting Mia Dolce from scratch and introducing my own ideas and passion into the business. I have enjoyed training Therapists throughout our 10 years in business, I love seeing them grow and become the best Therapists they can be. I also have an amazing team of professional women that I am lucky to work with every day.

Thank you to all our clients and customers for your loyalty and support over the last 10 years. We would not have been able to achieve any of this without you!
