What Is Dermaplaning And Why Do I Need It?

by Esha

Smooth makeup is like a mystery novel, searching your way through to find the answer. Does it require 4 different primers? Or maybe the best skincare on the planet? Possibly you are blessed with the best skin and closed the book on chapter one?

Recently, the popularity of the facial treatment Dermaplaning has hit our radar. We have seen the DIY face razors and ran a mile, but when it comes to a professional, we wondered if there was much of a difference? We had lots of questions.

Digital Manager, Georgia stopped in at Kyra Skin to see what all the fuzz is about!

So what is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is one of the most effective dermatologist-backed treatments for dealing with common skin issues like dull skin, wrinkles and breakouts.
The skin treatment focuses on a licensed aesthetician using an exfoliating blade (looks like a scalpel), gently scraping the surface, to remove “peach fuzz” hairs and dead skin cells. Aiming to improve your skins overall appearance, revealing a smooth and radiant surface. By removing the vellus hairs on our face, dermaplaning can be used to help makeup appear smoother, and help our expensive skincare penetrate faster, by creating smooth channels into the skin.

Dermaplaning is a treatment that can be done regularly, especially if “peach fuzz” is a concern. The therapy includes a full facial and is therefore amazing not just to remove the hair and the dead layer of the clients skin, but also drives relaxation. Contrary to popular belief, vellus hair doesn’t grow back in the way other body hair does, so if you’re thinking of having dermaplaning done as a once off, there is no cause for concern.

First, we prepped the skin with a double cleanse, Sour Cherry and Black Thorn 100% Organic Toner and a Therapeutic Steam to the face and neck. I was shown the brand new scalpel – for health & safety – and we got down to business. During the procedure, you shouldn’t feel any pain, something I wasn’t sure of given the nature of the exfoliation – think, Greys Anatomy. If anything the sensation was more of a light scratching compared to what I had anticipated, and, surprisingly, the shortest part of the treatment. Say good-bye dull skin!

Originally, I was under the impression – from who knows where – that Dermaplaning was only the removal of the skin cells and hairs however, I was pleasantly surprised when treated to a mask. Specifically targeting my skin concerns; redness and acne on my chin. An intensive After Care Hydro Jelly Mask for Soothing and Blemish Control. Which helps amazingly with redness as well as sensitive skin.

Mask benefits:

  • Instant Soothing, Anti Inflammatory, Antioxidant Properties and help reduce cell damage by pollution radicals.⁣
  • ⁣Ability to eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain and disinfect skin⁣
  • ⁣Exceptionally great after intensive treatments like laser, derma needling, peeling and so on. Helps speed up the healing process of the skin.⁣ Driving amazing results for Acne Prone and Problematic Skin.⁣

But wait, there’s more! Not only was the experience relaxing, if you need another reason to head to Kyra Skin Clinic, they have a foot-massage machine that props up on the bed for utterly luxurious relaxation.

Post-treatment my skin was glowing, covered in Medik8 Hydration and Vitamin C oils. My skin was visibility softer and appeared more plump. From the moment I left the clinic, I received compliments on how fresh my skin was. Now, three days post treatment, the glow has stuck around. I can’t make a comment on how it has changed the effectiveness of my skincare products, but I can say they have been absorbing slightly faster. The secret for a beautiful glow, I will be keeping this secret in my toolbox for a rainy day.
